Gold Surpasses $4,000 as Midterm Elections Shift US Power Dynamic

Spot gold and silver prices experienced significant gains during late trading in the United States on Wednesday. The surge followed Democratic victories in the U.S. midterm elections, which resulted in a new balance of power as the Democrats took control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate. This shift contributed to a decline in the value of the dollar, Treasury yields, and crude oil prices, leading to a renewed interest in precious metals such as gold and silver.

At the latest verified price, spot gold was observed trading at approximately $4,065.90 per ounce, marking an increase of $136.50, or 3.47%. Spot silver was valued at around $52.280, up by $2.608, or 5.25%. Both metals showed a strong recovery following significant losses throughout October, with silver outpacing gold due to lower borrowing costs and a weakened dollar supporting prices in the precious metals market.

The outcomes of the midterm elections not only disrupted Republican dominance but also raised expectations for potential legislative gridlock as President Donald Trump's administration faces new challenges in advancing fiscal policies. Investors are increasingly viewing this outcome as indicative of restrained fiscal expansion, which may affect federal borrowing requirements. Notably, while substantial budget deficits persist, the new congressional control raises the likelihood of legislative scrutiny regarding policies involving artificial intelligence, energy, and military operations.

Following the election results, Treasury markets demonstrated an initial rally, with the yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note dropping to approximately 4.89%, its lowest level in nearly two months. Traders subsequently reassessed the economic landscape based on forthcoming economic reports and the Treasury Department's borrowing strategies, leading the yield to close around 4.88%. As crude oil prices fell, expectations for decreased inflation pressures contributed to the changes in yields and the dollar's value against major currencies.

Analysis of the election outcomes revealed that expectations of congressional gridlock could limit additional fiscal stimulus, leading to reassessment by some investors about the likelihood of further monetary tightening from the Federal Reserve. The decline in Treasury yields and a softer dollar provided immediate upside support for gold, with falling credit costs also favouring silver prices.

Recent reports concerning U.S. economic performance have painted a mixed picture. The ADP private-sector employment report indicated an increase of 86,000 jobs for October, surpassing expectations and matching the gains from September. This job growth was predominantly seen in sectors such as trade, transportation, utilities, education, and leisure and hospitality, while industries like professional and business services showed a decline in employment. Additionally, the October Institute for Supply Management services index fell to 54.5, suggesting persistent cost pressures in the service sector despite signs of moderation.

The international trade deficit also experienced a slight narrowing, from $105.7 billion in August to $105.0 billion in September, amid increased exports and imports. The figures highlighted ongoing international trade activity, even amidst rising borrowing costs and geopolitical uncertainties.

Attention is now shifting towards forthcoming economic data, including weekly initial jobless claims and preliminary figures for third-quarter nonfarm productivity, both scheduled for release on Thursday. The October employment report, set to be published on Friday, will be crucial for shaping expectations surrounding the Federal Reserve's monetary policy meeting in early December.

The geopolitical climate, particularly regarding the U.S.-Iran relationship, continues to be a significant source of uncertainty. However, the recent Democratic victories may prompt a push for diplomatic resolutions, complicating prospects for military funding and operations pertaining to Iran.

As ongoing diplomatic discussions take place, efforts to address sanctions relief, nuclear activities, and maritime security are in focus, particularly concerning the Strait of Hormuz. Although there are hints of progress towards a framework agreement, critical disagreements persist, leaving the overall security situation fragile. Concerns about possible military confrontations or breakdowns in negotiations remain salient despite a backdrop of renewed diplomatic optimism.
