French wheat prices reached an unprecedented level on July 14, according to a report from Platts, part of S&P Global Energy. The assessment placed wheat at Eur219.25 per metric ton ($250.40 per metric ton) on a free-on-board basis and Eur217 per metric ton at the CPT Rouen benchmark, marking the highest valuation since Platts began tracking the FOB market in July 2025.
The price surge was driven by a combination of renewed geopolitical tensions in the Black Sea and Middle East regions, along with worsening weather risks across the European Union. Reports from last week indicated disruptions to Russian shipping in the Sea of Azov, a key corridor for Russian wheat exports. Local media reported that Ukrainian strikes on Russian tankers led Russia to temporarily halt shipping from the Don River into the Sea of Azov, a route that handles approximately 25% of Russian wheat exports.
Market sources said the heatwave sweeping through the EU is expected to further stress crops, with late-season winter wheat and all spring crops considered particularly vulnerable. A French wheat broker commented that some winter crops already harvested have partial protection, but the market is again drawing support from weather concerns, recovering part of the losses from the sharp correction at the end of May. The broker added that the geopolitical risk premium has overshadowed ongoing harvest pressure and that the market is beginning to price in the risk of prolonged export disruptions.
In France, the soft wheat harvest is 59% complete, according to FranceAgriMer, compared with a five-year average of 16% at this time of year. The agency reported that crop condition ratings declined by 3% to good/excellent, though it noted that the measure becomes less indicative as harvesting progresses. A trader attributed the unusually rapid pace to an early, sustained heat spell that accelerated crop development. The trader noted that while the winter grain harvest has started and provides some buffer for wheat and barley, spring barley and corn remain vulnerable.
The European Association of Cereals and Oilseed Traders July crop forecast placed expected wheat production (excluding durum) at 140.8 million metric tons, down from the previous estimate of 143.7 million metric tons and compared with 149.8 million metric tons in 2025, due to severe heat and dryness in France and Eastern Europe.
On the demand side, Morocco's domestic wheat harvest remains active, according to a Morocco-based trader. The total collected volume is estimated at around 500,000 metric tons, roughly 15% of the total wheat crop, with daily arrivals running at about 15,000 metric tons nationwide. Earlier market estimates had placed collected volume closer to 350,000 metric tons, with daily arrivals between 15,000 and 20,000 metric tons. Available wheat stocks were estimated at around 2 million metric tons, equivalent to roughly five months of milling demand.
