A broad selloff in global bonds drove U.S. 10-year Treasury yields close to the widely monitored 5% mark, according to Reuters. The report, published on September 11, attributes the pressure to inflation worries tied to oil prices moving well above $100 a barrel and growing expectations of a near-term U.S. rate increase.
Borrowing costs have reached multi-decade highs across major markets including Tokyo, Sydney, New York and London, with investors pricing in rate increases to address price pressures linked to a war in the Middle East that has lasted more than six months.
The European Central Bank raised rates on Thursday and cautioned that price pressures could persist, while U.S. producer price data for August reinforced expectations of an imminent rate move when the Federal Reserve meets the following week.
Expanding government borrowing across developed markets has also remained a lasting concern, with investors seeking greater compensation to hold sovereign debt.
Sovereign yields act as a benchmark for asset prices across financial markets, and the higher cost of money translates into steeper mortgage rates for consumers and more difficult spending decisions for governments as debt costs rise.
Mansoor Mohi-uddin, chief macro strategist at Bank of Singapore, described the situation as a combination of higher oil prices, increased inflation fears, central bank hawkishness and persistent fiscal deficit concerns all driving global yields upward. He added that if the evening's consumer price data proved strong, 10-year Treasury yields would likely move above 5.00%, referring to U.S. CPI data expected later on Friday.
Some analysts view a sustained move above 5% for 10-year Treasuries as a critical threshold that could make bonds more competitive with stocks and potentially draw dollars away from equity markets.
Higher Treasury yields also feed into the broader economy through costlier mortgages, auto and consumer loans, and more expensive corporate and municipal borrowing.
10-Year Yield Just Shy of 5%
Yields on 10-year Treasury notes reached 4.97% in early Asian hours, their highest levels since late 2023, keeping investors uneasy about a possible jump beyond 5%, a level briefly breached three years earlier.
Asian bonds extended the global selloff, with Australia's three-year government bond yields rising 18 basis points to a 15-year high of 5.047%.
Japan's 10-year government bond yields increased 6 basis points to 2.97%, with the Bank of Japan widely expected to raise rates to a 31-year high the following week and possibly signal faster tightening ahead.
