U.S. factory production held steady in June, according to a Federal Reserve report cited by Reuters on July 17, 2026. The flat reading followed an upwardly revised 0.1% gain in May, while economists had anticipated a 0.1% increase. On a year-over-year basis, manufacturing output rose 1.1% in June.
Despite the monthly stagnation, the sector posted its strongest quarterly growth in five years during the second quarter, expanding at a 4.7% annualized rate. This compared to a 1.4% pace in the first three months of the year. The robust performance was fueled by heavy business investment in artificial intelligence and inventory accumulation driven by concerns over shortages and higher prices linked to the conflict in the Middle East.
Manufacturing, which represents roughly 9.4% of the U.S. economy, saw motor vehicles and parts production climb 0.7% in June. Output of computers and peripheral equipment fell 0.5% for the month but surged 9.2% year-on-year and rose at a 7.2% rate in the second quarter. Communications equipment production increased 0.7% in June and grew at a 9.6% pace last quarter.
Output of semiconductors and related electronic components edged up 0.5% in June and accelerated at a 10.2% rate in the second quarter. Production of long-lasting manufactured goods slipped 0.1% over the month, offsetting a 0.2% gain in non-durable goods output.
Mining production rose 0.4% in June after a 1.1% increase in May. Energy output grew 0.5%, with oil and gas well drilling advancing 0.3%. Utilities production rebounded 0.4% as higher temperatures boosted demand for air conditioning, following a 0.7% decline in May.
Overall industrial production edged up 0.1% in June, matching the May increase, and rose 1.1% year-over-year. It grew at a 4.0% rate in the second quarter. Capacity utilization for the industrial sector remained unchanged at 76.1% in June, which is 3.3 percentage points below its average from 1972 to 2025. The operating rate for manufacturing dipped to 75.7% from 75.8% in May, standing 2.5 percentage points below its long-run average.
